THE SEAMAN'S FRIEND
by Richard Henry Dana

As d'Arcy Lever and Steel did for the 18th century, so does Dana for the 19th! Best known of course for his seminal work Two Years Before the Mast(see below), Dana was a consummate seaman. This little volume must have been in the pocket or sea-bag of every young man who went to sea in the 19th century. It is divided into three parts; A Plain Treatise on Practical Seamanship, (with a good Dictionary of Sea Terms,) Customs and Usages of the Merchant Service and Laws Relating to the Practical Duties of Master and Mariners. All good info to have if you are ever captured by a press gang or forced to take the "King's shilling!" First published in 1841.
